There were practically no sports cars in the Eastern Bloc, but individual enthusiasts attempted to create striking coupes like this Bulgarian Sofia. And sometimes they even managed to produce them.
The Sofia coupe is the brainchild of Bulgarian designer Velizar Andreev. The car was first shown at an exhibition in 1981.
The sports car was built on a tubular frame, and the body was made of fiberglass.
The VAZ-2101 engine allowed it to reach 140 km/h. Five years later, the Sofia-B appeared with a 1.6-liter engine from the VAZ-2106 and a top speed of 200 km/h. The car featured gullwing doors and a leather interior.
From 1989, the coupe was even put into production. They intended to assemble 200 cars but only managed to produce 12.
Moreover, two or three cars were even equipped with turbocharging.
Now, only a few Sofia coupes remain operational. Most of the sports cars have become completely unusable.
