To make all six wheels driving, the transmission and driveshafts had to be significantly modified. Now the Niva has two transfer cases, two inter-axle and a pair of rear differentials are locked. 
The six-wheeled Niva performs well in deep snow and can even pull a tow truck loaded with a VAZ out of a snowdrift. Although it did manage to get stuck for a short time.
