New tough tent from Rivian turns your R1 into a home on wheels — provided you can afford it

Rivian partners with camping gear manufacturer iKamper to launch a new durable tent, specifically designed for the R1S pickup and SUV. Considering that both of these vehicles are created with adventure enthusiasts in mind, it’s clear why Rivian offers such a product directly through its Gear Shop. The tent, known as the Skycamp Mini, weighs 137 pounds (61.8 kg) and is designed to mount onto roof racks of both the R1T and the R1S or to be installed on the bed of the R1T. The tent from iKamper is stored in a hard case and unfolds into position in just a minute. According to the company, the aerodynamic design of the case does not limit the travel range of the two Rivian models.

Some nice details include black mounting and Rivian branding. The product is made from breathable PFAS-free fabric, suitable for accommodating 1 or 2 people, and is appropriate for use in any season. It also comes standard with a self-inflating mattress and locking bar mounts compatible with Rivian’s adventure kit. The price presents a slight complication. iKamper has already marketed an almost identical version of the Skycamp Mini, just without Rivian branding, for $3,895.

But the version with branding — seemingly the logo makes it more expensive — costs $4,595. Some may feel that it is worth paying extra for the exclusive Rivian style, but for many, it is a difficult decision. This is not the only tent offered by Rivian. Over the past two years, they have sold a two-person tent for $2,800 for the R1S in collaboration with Yakima. However, unlike the iKamper option, it does not have a hard case or a self-inflating mattress.

If you intend to turn your R1 into a full-fledged mobile base camp, you will also have to spend an additional $1,400 on the Travel Kitchen, which is also sold by Rivian. This kit includes two stove burners powered by a system with 1500W working from a 120V outlet. It folds for storage and will become part of the expanding range of Adventure Gear.
