Who would have thought that a wagon would outsell a sedan in the US

BMW M5 Touring exceeds expectations in the US

Although wagons in the US remain a niche product, the right brand and specifications can turn a “practical” car into a hit. This is exactly what is happening with the new BMW M5 Touring, which is generating more excitement than the company expected.

After the success of the Audi RS6 Avant in the American market, it’s no surprise that buyers are interested in a high-performance wagon. However, the unexpected part is just how successful the M5 Touring has become. According to the head of BMW M, it has already outsold the sedan in the US.

Market reaction and global trends

“In Europe, the sedan is still more popular than the Touring, but in the US, it’s the opposite. We are seeing higher demand specifically for the wagon,” said Frank van Meel, head of BMW M.

He also added that the global sales distribution between the two body types is approximately 50/50. The new M5 is generating exceptionally high demand, and this trend is only growing.

Despite some controversy regarding the design and weight, the M5 Touring offers impressive specifications: a hybrid V8 with 717 horsepower and a large luggage compartment. It outperforms the Audi RS6 Performance by 100 horsepower while remaining a true wagon.

The price in the US starts at $121,500, which is $5,100 cheaper than the RS6 Avant. For buyers looking for a combination of power and practicality, the M5 Touring is becoming one of the most attractive options on the market.

Interestingly, the American market, traditionally oriented toward SUVs and pickups, is showing growing interest in premium wagons. This could signal a shift in preferences or simply highlight the uniqueness of BMW’s offering in this segment. Perhaps other manufacturers will also take notice of this trend.
