Volkswagen to drop ‘ID’ prefix in electric vehicle names
German automaker Volkswagen plans to change its naming strategy for electric vehicles. Starting in 2026, the company will abandon the ‘ID’ prefix in its EV model names in favor of more traditional names. This decision was announced by Volkswagen Board Member Martin Sander.
The ID brand was launched in 2017, with the first production model being the ID.3 in 2019. Since then, the lineup has expanded to several models, including ID.4, ID.5, ID.6 (for the Chinese market), ID.7, and ID.Buzz. However, the company has now decided to return to classic names.
New names for a new era
Martin Sander stated:
“Cars will once again get real names. This will become evident when we launch new models—neither ID.2all nor ID.Every1 will retain these names in series production.”
The ID.2 model, planned for 2026, is expected to be named Golf, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The smaller ID.1 model, set to appear in 2027, may be named after former models like Lupo, Fox, or Up!.
Ambitious goals and new markets
Volkswagen has set ambitious sales targets for electric vehicles. The ID.2all is expected to start at €25,000, and the ID.Every1 in 2027 at €20,000. The company is counting on reduced battery costs and new production methods to achieve these goals.
In the Chinese market, where Volkswagen faces stiff competition, the company is focused on a long-term strategy. Despite pressure from cheaper local competitors, Volkswagen plans to strengthen its position in 2026 with a new generation of EVs specifically designed for this market.
The shift to traditional names may help Volkswagen make its electric vehicles more understandable to consumers, especially during a period when the company simultaneously offers both electric and conventional versions of similar models. This strategy will also allow better utilization of recognizable names like Golf or Passat in the new electric era.
