In China, Toyota offers two versions of its popular RAV4 crossover: the Wildlander from its joint venture with GAC and the conventional RAV4 from FAW. Now that the world has seen the sixth-generation RAV4, the Chinese market is preparing for an updated version of the compact SUV.
The first images of the novelty appeared thanks to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Whereas the previous Wildlander had a unique design, it now almost completely replicates the RAV4, albeit with some technical differences.
Design Details and Technical Specifications
The new Wildlander differs from the RAV4 only in the name on the rear. It copies the design of the base RAV4 Core trim with a honeycomb-structure radiator grille and low bumper protectors. However, it seems Chinese buyers will not be offered more off-road-oriented versions like the Woodland or Adventure.
The model’s dimensions are 4,600 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. These figures are almost identical to the European and North American RAV4, although minor discrepancies remain.
Powertrains
The main difference of the Wildlander lies in the choice of engines. Unlike the global RAV4, which has switched to hybrids, the Chinese version has retained a gasoline option – a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 169 hp with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Two hybrid variants are also available: with a 2.0-liter (150 hp) and a 2.5-liter (182 hp) engine, both with electric motors and an all-wheel-drive option.
The official presentation of the Wildlander is expected to take place in the coming months. Shortly thereafter, the version from FAW Toyota will also hit the market, which is likely to be almost identical, except for the name.
The Chinese market continues to be key for Toyota, so localized versions of popular models always receive special attention. The Wildlander, despite its external resemblance to the RAV4, offers more powertrain options, which could be a decisive factor for local buyers.
