Starting in October 2025, new legal definitions for electric bicycles will come into effect in Connecticut. Authorities will classify them based on power and other technical characteristics. These changes aim to improve road safety, especially considering the emergence of high-speed models.
Currently, most electric bicycles have a speed limit of 20–28 mph. However, some models can reach significantly higher speeds, which is causing concern among law enforcement. As Westport Police Lieutenant Serenity Dobson stated:
These bicycles can accelerate to 60–70 mph after certain modifications, and kids know how to do it.

According to the new rules:
Most modern electric bicycles will not fall under these restrictions, as their power is significantly lower. For example, popular models from well-known brands typically do not exceed 1000 W and have pedals, so they will remain in the usual category.
These changes reflect a global trend in regulating alternative transportation. Local authorities are trying to find a balance between supporting environmental initiatives and ensuring road safety, especially considering the growing popularity of electric bicycles among young people. Similar regulations are already in place in some European countries, and Connecticut is becoming one of the first US states to implement such a classification system.
