The Suzuki company is preparing to present an updated version of its iconic Jimny off-roader on the Japanese market as early as August. The changes will be minor — the exterior, interior, and technical specifications are expected to remain unchanged. The main updates will concern safety systems.
As sources report, the three-door Jimny will receive an updated Suzuki Safety Support system, which is already installed on the five-door Jimny Nomade. Among the innovations are an automatic braking system with a dual camera, a pause function for recognizing road signs, as well as additional assistants for models with an automatic transmission.
Why Won’t the Exterior Change?
The design of the Jimny will remain the same, and this is unlikely to disappoint the model’s fans. The Suzuki company does not plan to make changes to the exterior or release special versions, as the current main priority is fulfilling the accumulated orders. Demand for the Jimny Sierra and Jimny Nomade is so high that Suzuki has even temporarily suspended accepting applications.
No changes are expected under the hood either. In Japan, the narrow-body Jimny continues to be equipped with a 660cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine, while the Jimny Sierra and Nomade get a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine.
Prospects for Other Markets
After the updated version is released in Japan, similar changes may appear in other markets. For example, in Australia, the three-door Jimny temporarily disappeared from sale due to safety issues, but with the updated systems, it could make a comeback. In Europe, Suzuki is already preparing to update the model, which may allow the return of the passenger version after restrictions due to emissions.
A fully electrified version of the Jimny is unfortunately not planned. Company president Toshihiro Suzuki confirmed that the model will not receive an electric drive, as the brand is focused on alternative fuel types.
Despite the lack of global changes, the Jimny continues to remain popular among off-road enthusiasts. Its minimalist design, reliability, and off-road capabilities make it unique in a market where more and more models are switching to electrification and complex technologies. The update of the safety systems only emphasizes the balance between tradition and modern requirements.
