The compact sedan market has undergone significant changes, but the Kia K4 has become a pleasant exception. This model proves that thoughtful design and rational use of space can attract buyers even in a segment that many consider neglected.
The K4 is the smallest sedan in the Kia lineup, but it has already become a sales hit: since the beginning of the year, over 63 thousand units have been sold in the USA. The success is partly explained by the affordable price — starting from $24 thousand, although the top-of-the-line GT-Line Turbo version costs $31,445.
Design That Attracts Attention
The exterior of the K4 combines features of larger Kia models, such as the EV9 and Sorento, in a compact format. Sharp body lines, an aggressive radiator grille, and unusual headlights make it noticeable on the road. Although the design cannot be called classically harmonious, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.
Driving Qualities
The GT-Line Turbo version is equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 190 hp, which is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Unfortunately, the dynamics are not impressive: the transmission responds with a delay, the steering is not informative enough, and the overall driving feel is rather mediocre. However, the model shows good fuel economy — up to 33 miles per gallon on the highway.
Interior and Comfort
The K4’s interior looks modern and well-thought-out. The manufacturer has abandoned inconvenient touch panels in favor of physical climate control buttons. The two 12.3-inch screens (instrument cluster and multimedia) are convenient to use, and the rear row offers surprisingly plenty of space for passengers. The 15 cubic foot trunk is one of the largest in its class.
Competitors
The main rival of the K4 is the Honda Civic, which remains the segment leader thanks to its trusted reputation and diverse range of powertrains. However, Kia offers a longer warranty period — 10 years on the powertrain, which could be a decisive argument for many buyers.
Despite some shortcomings, the Kia K4 proves that compact sedans can still be popular. Its market success is the result of a successful combination of design, practicality, and an attractive price. The model has already outperformed many competitors, and this trend may continue, especially if Kia offers a hybrid version in the future.
