Ford Mustang Dark Horse vs. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: U-Drag Race
Ford has long lacked a true competitor for the Corvette, while Chevrolet, having discontinued the Camaro, also found itself without a direct rival for the Mustang. However, comparing the base Corvette with the most powerful version of the Mustang proved to be very interesting, especially in the U-drag race format, where the difference between the cars becomes obvious.
This race format allows for evaluating not only acceleration but also braking, handling, and top speed. On paper, both cars have similar specifications: the Corvette produces 495 hp, and the Mustang Dark Horse produces 500 hp. However, the Mustang has less torque and weighs 354 pounds more. At the same time, it costs $21,000 less.
Race Results
In the first run, the Corvette started faster and was already a full second ahead at the quarter-mile. Better handling allowed it to finish with a two-second advantage. The second run repeated this result. According to Edmunds, the Corvette was faster at all stages: to 60 mph, in the quarter-mile, and in the total lap time.
The difference between a true mid-engine supercar and a good front-engine sports car turned out to be obvious.
The Corvette won in all aspects – acceleration, handling, and braking. The Mustang Dark Horse showed decent results but could not compete with the lighter and more technological Corvette. The cost of both cars also played its role, as the Mustang offers good performance for a significantly lower price.
