New Toyota RAV4 to Arrive Sooner Than You Expect

Update: Toyota has finally shown the first official images of the new model, although it did not name it directly. But everyone has already guessed that it is the RAV4. The full presentation is scheduled for May 21, and for now, the company has started publishing teasers.

Toyota’s North American division limited itself to three exterior photos, showing the car on a country road, city streets, and a snowy track. However, European colleagues have published additional shots showing parts of the interior.

These images show that the dashboard design resembles the new Camry. Among the main changes are a separate digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment system screen located high on the center console. A massive center tunnel with what appears to be an updated gear lever is also visible.

The RAV4 continues to lead in sales, even surpassing the Ford F-150, and remains a primary source of profit for the Japanese manufacturer. Although the fifth generation is nearing the end of its life cycle, Toyota is preparing its successor, which will not be a completely new model.

Future Cars:

The new RAV4 has been spotted multiple times during testing in Detroit and Japan. It is expected to receive significant updates, but not as extensive as a full generation change. As with the Camry, the model will retain the current platform and powertrains. The exterior will get an updated design, but it is obvious that this is not an entirely new version.

Evolutionary Design

The current generation RAV4, introduced at the New York Auto Show, was notable for its sharp and aggressive lines, distinguishing it from its predecessors. In 2026, the design will remain recognizable but with minor aerodynamic improvements.

The front end has received new styling, similar to the Toyota Crown and Prius. It features LED daytime running lights with characteristic internal elements and a honeycomb radiator grille. The final version may look more square with contrasting details.

The side profile retains the recognizable silhouette with a two-tone roof and bright lower cladding. The rear is likely to get full-width LED taillights and square lower panels with silver inserts.

Since Honda recently announced an updated CR-V, Toyota is unlikely to want to fall behind in this segment. To increase competitiveness, the company may introduce an off-road TRD Pro version.

What about the photo leak?

Our previous image was created before the appearance of a photo that was likely shown at a presentation in China. It appears to depict the successor to the Toyota Wildlander—a local version of the RAV4 for the Chinese market. It is not yet clear whether the RAV4 and Wildlander will retain design differences.

Technical Features

The interior of the new model remains a secret for now, but judging by the updated Camry, one can expect improved materials and more modern technology. Cabin dimensions are likely to remain unchanged.

The multimedia system will get a larger screen with improved graphics, support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and voice control. The list of options may include a heads-up display, panoramic roof, ambient lighting, and wireless charging.

The car will most likely be built on the TNGA-K platform with improved safety ratings to meet new crash test standards.

Electric and Hybrid Variants

Rumors about a fully electric version have not been confirmed yet. Instead, in 2026, the RAV4 may become an exclusively hybrid model with slightly more powerful and economical engines.

If we follow the Camry’s lead, the hybrid version will get a 2.5-liter engine with two electric motors (225 hp for front-wheel drive versions and 232 hp for all-wheel drive). A plug-in hybrid will be added to the lineup later.

There is a possibility of a fully electric modification, but details are unknown for now. If Toyota decides to develop this direction, the model name will not use complex indices.

Competitors and Presentation Date

The new RAV4 will have to compete with models such as the Mazda CX-5 Hybrid, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and other compact crossovers.

The official debut is expected this year, with sales starting in the fall as the 2026 model. Prices will likely remain at the level of current hybrid versions—starting from $30,000.
