One of the Most Famous Italian Design Brands Could Be Audi’s Next Major Loss

The Audi Group is considering the possibility of selling the Italdesign studio as part of its cost optimization measures.

According to sources, preparations for the deal have already begun, and an official announcement could be made on May 12th.

Italdesign has a rich history and is considered one of the most famous design companies in the world.

Last year was difficult for Audi, so the brand announced plans for cost reductions until 2029. The company’s CEO, Gernot Döllner, emphasized the need to increase the speed, flexibility, and efficiency of operations.

It seems the transformation is taking on a larger scale – information has emerged about the possible sale of Italdesign. This design studio was founded back in 1968 and immediately began collaborating with Volkswagen on the first generation of the Golf and Passat.

Over time, the company’s reputation grew, and the Volkswagen Group acquired 90.1% of its shares. Management of the studio was transferred to Audi, and the company acquired the remaining 9.9% of shares in 2015.

According to reports, union representatives informed a local newspaper about the start of preparations for the sale. This includes conducting an audit and valuation of Italdesign. An official announcement could be made as early as next week during the general meeting on May 12th.

Potential buyers have not been disclosed yet, but it is known that Italdesign employs about 1,000 staff in China, Europe, and the USA. Their future remains uncertain.

However, given the company’s prestige and its expertise in design and engineering, high interest in the purchase can be expected. Italdesign participated in the creation of such legendary models as the Audi 80, Alfa Romeo Brera, BMW M1, and DeLorean DMC-12. In recent years, the studio collaborated with Nissan on the limited-series GT-R50 and introduced its own concept model – a powerful pickup truck with 2,145 hp.
