Toyota Hybrid Hatchback Now Resembles Prius and Brakes Like a $185,000 Premium SUV

Updated Design and Equipment

Toyota has introduced the updated Aqua hatchback for the Japanese market, which has received the distinctive “hammerhead” design and a number of technical improvements. The car’s exterior has been redesigned: new headlights are integrated with a full-length LED light bar, and the bumper has become sleeker with a smaller lower grille, reminiscent of the Prius style.

Key changes include:

Interior and Technology

The Aqua’s interior has also been updated. All trim levels now come with a standard 7-inch digital instrument cluster, which is paired with an 8- or 10.5-inch multimedia system. An electronic parking brake with a hold function has been added, as well as the enhanced Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 safety system.

Technical Features

The car is built on the TNGA-B platform, which it shares with the Yaris and Yaris Cross. The hybrid system remains unchanged: a 1.5-liter petrol engine, two electric motors, and a nickel-metal hydride battery. The model is offered in front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. The Aqua has also received the “Smooth Stop Control” function, borrowed from the flagship Century SUV.

Price and Availability

The updated Aqua is already available for order in Japan. Prices start at ¥2,486,000 ($16,900) for the base front-wheel drive X trim and go up to ¥3,022,800 ($20,600) for the top-tier all-wheel drive Z trim.

Offers from Modellista

Modellista has introduced a sporty body kit for the Aqua, which includes a front bumper with integrated LEDs, side skirts, and a rear diffuser. These elements can be combined with 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, and wood interior trim. The cost of the body kit is ¥174,900 ($1,200), the wheels are ¥149,600 ($1,000), and the interior details are ¥30,800 ($210).

The Aqua update highlights the growing competition in the hybrid compact car market, where Japanese manufacturers continue to refine design and technology without significantly increasing cost. This model remains an important player for the local market, demonstrating how traditional brands adapt to modern trends without radical changes to the technical base.
