Ford’s Mustang Design Contest in China Goes Beyond Conventional Standards

Recently, Ford held a design contest in China that challenged students to rethink the Mustang.

The Mustang Mach-S concept looks very stylish and imagines the pony car as a station wagon.

The Mustang Super Utility concept is an electric vehicle that combines coupe styling with pickup truck capabilities.

The year of variety for Stellantis is ending, but Ford recently held a similar contest for the Mustang in China. Known as “Mustang: The Grand Remix Tour,” the event brought together Ford Design China with local design students to sketch the future of the legendary pony car.

The program started at the end of last year and involved 25 students from 22 different colleges and universities in China and abroad. In February, eight students were selected to travel to Ford’s design center in Shanghai, where they began an immersive week-long design program, working one-on-one with professional designers. As part of this process, they transformed their sketches into three-dimensional digital models.

In the end, several designs “stood out” and were chosen to be turned into physical cars. The clear star is the Mustang Mach-S concept by Liu Sizhuo. The Tsinghua University student created a stylish station wagon that is instantly recognizable as a Mustang but is much more practical.

German Xie Yian took a radically different path, as his Mustang Super Utility concept seeks to combine coupe styling with the practicality of a pickup truck. The model is also envisioned as fully electric.

The Mustang Hyper Tandem concept by Lai Yushun draws inspiration from auto racing and features a tandem-style cabin similar to fighter jets. This places the drivers at the center of the action, while the rest of the car has an “exaggerated and visually striking aerodynamic design.”

All three concept models will be presented at , where Max Wolff from Ford expressed his pride, saying, “We are grateful to have attracted so many outstanding young design talents to this very rare learning opportunity.”
