The Best Version of the Mazda MX-5 Isn’t Sold in the US, But It’s Available to Drive in Gran Turismo 7

The Uniqueness of the MX-5 in the Modern Market

In a world where new cars are becoming heavier and larger, the Mazda MX-5 stands out for its compactness and lightness. This is precisely why the brand used it to launch the Mazda Spirit Racing division last year, introducing a sportier version of the MX-5, known as the 12R.

Unfortunately, production of the model is limited to only 200 units, and it will be sold exclusively in Japan. To somehow console those who will never get a chance to see the 12R in real life, Mazda has added it to the Gran Turismo 7 game.

Digital Version for Fans

Mazda claims to have made significant efforts to ensure the MX-5 12R in Gran Turismo 7 is a faithful copy of the real model. The real car was scanned so that every detail would be perfect, and Mazda also recorded the sound of its exhaust system. Players will be able to get behind the wheel of the MX-5 for 12,000,000 in-game credits.

The Mazda Spirit Racing division was created to replace Mazdaspeed, which ceased to exist over a decade ago. Numerous updates were made to the 12R to make it an even better car for mountain roads or the track, without sacrificing the comfort and handling on regular roads that helped make the compact roadster such an icon.

Technical Improvements

The 12R’s 2.0-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine received a number of new components, including reworked camshafts, special pistons, a modified cylinder head, and a new manifold, which increased power to 197 hp. To improve handling, Bilstein dampers, additional body stiffeners, and more substantial tires have been installed.

The exterior also received a number of thoughtful details. Standard equipment includes lightweight black Rays TE37 six-spoke wheels, bright red brake calipers, extended side sills, and a front spoiler unique to this model. Together, they give the MX-5 12R a purposeful look without straying from its clean, classic proportions.

The limited release of the Spirit Racing 12R highlights Mazda’s strategy of creating exclusive, driver-oriented cars, even if they are only available to a small circle of buyers. Its appearance in Gran Turismo 7 allows a wider audience to become acquainted with this special model, which could generate additional interest in the brand and its future high-performance initiatives. This approach also demonstrates how automakers can use virtual spaces to present their most unique developments when physical production is limited.
