Federal Investigation of Rivian Vehicles Following Driver Complaints about Malfunctions

Investigation into Safety Issues of Rivian Electric Vans

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into 17,198 Rivian electric vans due to potential problems with the driver’s seat belt anchorage system. According to the regulator, in the event of a crash, drivers may be left without functional restraint systems, creating a serious safety hazard.

Vehicle Owners’ Complaints

The Office of Defects Investigation has received six official complaints from owners reporting potential failures of the seat belt anchorage system.

The documents describe numerous instances where the steel woven cable of the seat belt wears out, breaks, or unravels, leaving occupants without restraint during a collision.

Technical Aspects of the Problem

It is also noted that a worn cable can reduce the load-bearing capacity of the seat belt. According to NHTSA representatives, a faulty seat belt system poses an unreasonable risk to vehicle safety.

Scope of the Investigation

The investigation will cover vans from model years 2022 and 2023. ODI representatives stated that they will focus on assessing the integrity of the seat belt assembly part, installation methods, and potential changes or deficiencies in design or manufacturing. The research will also help understand the frequency and severity of the identified problem.

Current Status and Model History

To date, the regulator has not recorded any cases of injuries or deaths related to the failure of the seat belt anchorage system in Rivian vans.

The Rivian EDV model is offered in three wheelbase and payload capacity variants. Initially, the van was produced exclusively for Amazon after the retailer ordered 100,000 units, with deliveries scheduled to continue until 2030. Since November 2023, the electric van has become available to other companies under the name ECV.

This situation highlights the importance of proper quality control in the automotive industry, especially when it comes to new technologies and mass production. The fact that the problem was detected early without serious consequences may indicate the effectiveness of the safety monitoring system, although the scale of the investigation shows the seriousness of the potential defect.
