A sixteen-year-old girl from Florida had been happily using a 2017 Toyota RAV4, gifted to her by her parents Craig and Hannah Blanchard, for seven months. However, this important milestone in the teenager’s life was abruptly cut short when representatives from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office arrived and booted the car right in the driveway. As it turned out, the reason was not an error with the documents or an unpaid parking fine – the SUV was marked in the system as stolen.
Vehicle Origin and the Deal
The parents purchased the RAV4 in person from Vasilios “Bill” Ioannidis from the city of Dunedin, who owns a local auto repair shop B&B Spyder Customs. The seller obtained the vehicle through a mechanic’s lien because the previous owner did not pay for the completed repair work.
Financial Consequences for the Family
To afford the $17,000 SUV, the Blanchards used a home equity loan and paid using bank checks. Now that the police have confiscated the Toyota, they continue to make monthly payments for the car they no longer have and are forced to cover the ongoing insurance costs.
It’s a payment for nothing, – Craig Blanchard said. – Who wants to do that every month when I could be directing that money to other needs?
Seller’s Reaction and Legal Status
Ioannidis refused to comment on how exactly he obtained the documents for the RAV4, although he denied knowing it was stolen. Currently, the vehicle registration certificate has been annulled by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The seller informed the family that if they are unable to get the Toyota back, he will fully reimburse them the $17,000 they paid.
