New Toyota Hilux design sparks controversy
Earlier this week, Toyota unveiled the updated Hilux pickup, which, despite retaining the technical foundation of its predecessor, received a radically new exterior appearance. The changes are so significant that they have sparked lively discussions even among the model’s most devoted fans.

Reaction from Toyota management
Company representatives are not worried about the controversy surrounding the design. One executive is confident that the new look will win buyers’ favor just as easily as previous generations of the model.
What is Cyber Sumo?
Toyota describes the new Hilux design as “Cyber Sumo”. This style is characterized by clear lines and a massive front end that looks more aggressive and modern. The design was developed by Toyota Australia, and according to Sean Hanley, head of sales and marketing, it will not repel customers.
“This will in no way repel buyers. I am very confident in this product. Very confident,” he said.
Hanley also noted that polarizing designs have become commonplace, especially among electric vehicles, and he personally admires the new look of the Hilux.
Designer’s opinion
Nick Hogios, senior design manager at Toyota Australia, emphasized that the new Hilux is a step into modernity. He acknowledged that the model is significantly different from its predecessor, but at the same time retains time-tested solutions.

“This model is quite a big departure from the current one. It is built on the proven foundations of the Hilux, but we believe that customers will love this design for years to come,” Hogios said.
The question of whether everyone will like the new design remains open, but Toyota shows confidence in its choice. Whether the Cyber Sumo style will be successful, or whether the classic look will remain preferable – time will tell. The Hilux update reflects a general trend among automakers to experiment with exterior design, especially in the commercial vehicle segment, where conservative solutions have traditionally prevailed. This could also be an attempt to attract a younger audience that values bold and innovative design solutions.
