BMW is preparing an update for the 5-Series model, which will include sharper headlights and modified grilles. Observations of camouflaged prototypes suggest that the sedan will likely not receive the radical Neue Klasse style, instead retaining a cleaner and more familiar appearance.
BMW’s strategy for mid-lifecycle model updates is becoming more deliberate. Although it was initially expected that the 5-Series would receive a design inspired by the Vision Neue Klasse concept, recent spy photos point to a different course of events. The automaker appears to have decided to refine the existing design, opting for more restrained changes.
The camouflaged 2027 5-Series Touring prototype showcases kidney-shaped grilles whose shape echoes that of the current model, although they have been subtly reworked to appear more refined and angular.
New Headlights and Overall Appearance
The headlights also appear new. They do not adopt a more experimental look like those on the iX3, but offer a design that sits between the current 5-Series and what BMW is implementing in the future Neue Klasse lineup.
Inspired by these recent sightings, digital artist Sugar Design created a series of renderings of what the updated 5-Series might look like after its launch. While the changes may not be as significant as initially expected, it cannot be denied that this design looks much more attractive than the current car.
The rendering showcases not only the new grilles. The headlights have become sharper, featuring redesigned LED daytime running lights with a cleaner and more aggressive shape. The bumper has also been reworked to match the overall style, simplifying some of the more intricate elements of the previous model and giving the sedan a more contemporary look.
As with most facelifts, very few changes – if any at all – will be made to the profile of the 2027 5-Series. The wheel design may be updated, but the basic shape and surface treatment are likely to remain the same.
Rear and Interior Changes
At the rear, visual changes are also restrained. The taillights retain their existing shape, albeit with redesigned internal elements that add visual complexity. Minor changes, but they contribute to an overall more refined look.
It remains unclear how much the interior will be borrowed from other Neue Klasse models. BMW may decide to align the 5-Series with the more futuristic layout seen in the iX3, including the wide panoramic iDrive display system positioned low on the dashboard and a separate angled infotainment screen. The new four-spoke iX3 steering wheel is also expected to appear in the 5-Series cabin.
Technical Updates
From a mechanical standpoint, significant updates do not seem to be on the horizon. The existing powertrain lineup, including the 255 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, will most likely remain unchanged. Diesel variants are expected to continue in markets where they are still in demand, alongside hybrid models and the fully electric i5.
BMW’s approach to updating a key model demonstrates a balance between innovation and preserving identity. Instead of revolutionary changes, the company is betting on evolutionary refinement designed to satisfy both fans of the brand’s classic design and expectations for modern technology. This decision may be calculated to ensure sales stability in the business sedan segment, where conservatism is often valued. Market conditions, particularly regarding the transition to electric vehicles, may be forcing manufacturers to reconsider the pace and scale of design changes for individual models.
