All Mazda Models Showed a Drop in Sales Last Month, Except One That Set a Record

January 2026 proved to be a challenging month for Mazda in the US market. The company’s total sales volume fell by 14 percent compared to the same period last year. However, the brand notes that this figure still represents the third-best January result in all 55 years of its presence in the American market.

Overall Sales Picture

Last month, Mazda sold 28,958 vehicles in the United States. This is 14 percent less than in January 2025, when 33,681 units were sold. Taking into account an extra sales day this year, the adjusted decline is 17.3 percent.

Model Details: Who Lost Ground

Mazda3 sales amounted to 2,473 units, which is 17.1% less than last year. Interestingly, the dynamics differed by version: sedan sales dropped sharply by 39.4% (1,270 cars), while the hatchback, on the contrary, grew by 35.6% (1,203 cars).

2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 sports roadster showed one of the largest declines. Its sales plummeted by 42%, to just 395 cars. The CX-30 crossover had an even tougher month: deliveries shrank by 63.6%, to 2,423 units. The brand’s most popular model, the CX-5, also recorded an 8% decline, although the situation may change with the arrival of the updated version at dealerships.

Larger models, the CX-70 and CX-90, also showed significant drops. CX-70 sales fell by 29% (672 cars), and CX-90 sales almost halved, down 49.4% (2,707 cars).

A Bright Exception: The Success of the CX-50

2025 Mazda CX-50

Against the backdrop of the overall decline, the only model that demonstrated significant growth is the CX-50 crossover. In January, 10,415 such cars were sold, which is a record January figure for this model. This number represents an increase of 64.4% compared to the 6,335 units sold in January 2025.

Situation Outside the US

While negative dynamics are observed in the US market, the situation is better in other North American countries. In Canada, Mazda sales in January grew by 4.9%, to 4,974 cars. In Mexico, the increase was 11%, with the total volume reaching 8,704 units.

This sales dynamic may not only be a specific problem for Mazda but also reflect general market trends. Rising borrowing costs and economic uncertainty often lead buyers to postpone purchasing a new car. The success of the CX-50 indicates that even in a difficult period, a correctly positioned product that meets market demands (for example, in size, functionality, or price) can find its customer. The future will show whether this model will become a locomotive for the brand, capable of pulling up the overall figures, or whether the company will have to look for new approaches to stimulate demand for other models in its portfolio.
