New Life for a Legendary Name
Land Rover is not only working on a smaller Defender but also bringing the Freelander name back to the market. This time, it will appear on a completely new, rugged SUV created specifically for the Chinese market. If visualizations based on spy photos are accurate, the car will have a bold and distinctive look.
The project is being handled by the Chery Jaguar Land Rover (CJLR) joint venture. The new Freelander will be built on the existing Chery T1X platform, which underpins various SUVs from the Jaecoo, Omoda, and Chery brands. This means lower development costs and a significantly faster time to market.
Freelander as a Separate Sub-Brand
Interestingly, Land Rover is not simply reviving the Freelander name for a single model. Instead, the name will become a separate sub-brand, which over time may receive several different models. The first such SUV has already been spotted during testing in heavy camouflage, allowing for detailed renderings to be created.
Design and Exterior
Based on the latest spy shots, the first Freelander looks reassuringly ‘boxy,’ just as one would expect from a vehicle with the Land Rover badge. At the front, it is likely to get slim headlights with simple daytime running lights, black split grilles, and a hood with a noticeable bulge.

Possible similarities with the larger Defender, especially in the smooth profile of the side doors and the black roof and pillars. Like the previous Freelander, the new model will have body-colored, slanted C-pillars.

The rear design may be controversial. The renderings show small rear lights positioned just above the bumper, giving the rear a somewhat unusual stature. It is hoped that on the production model the lights will be positioned a bit higher.
Technical Details and Production
The technical details of the new Freelander have not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to be offered in both fully electric and hybrid (EREV) versions. Production will be handled by the CJLR plant in Changshu.

The return of the Freelander as a more accessible sub-brand focused on the world’s largest market is a logical step for Jaguar Land Rover. Using a partner’s proven platform allows for a significantly accelerated launch and reduced risks. The key question remains whether this collaboration can preserve the qualities and spirit for which Land Rover vehicles are valued worldwide, as the long-term success of the brand in this new format will depend on precisely that.
