Complete Restoration of the Iconic Toyota AE86 by a Famous Tuner
The legendary Japanese tuning atelier TOM’s Racing has launched a full-scale restoration program for the iconic Toyota AE86 coupe. This initiative is a logical continuation of the Toyota GR Heritage Parts program, which last year began reproducing spare parts for this model.
Details of the Restoration Process
Every car that enters the TOM’s Heritage workshops undergoes a thorough rebuild. Specialists completely disassemble the car down to the bare body panels, repair all problematic areas, and reinforce the structure using new spot and MIG welds. After this, the body is gradually reassembled with new elements and painted.
Restored cars receive distinctive 15-inch wheels with a “double four-spoke” design. Aerodynamics are also improved thanks to TOM’s experience in motorsport — notably, a visible diffuser is installed, hidden behind the rear bumper.
Power Unit Modernization
Unlike many restorations that preserve factory specifications, the TOM’s program includes an update of the powertrain. The naturally aspirated four-cylinder 4-AG engine is modernized: the cylinder bore is increased from 81 mm to 82 mm, and the displacement — from 1,578 cm³ to 1,626 cm³.
This allows raising the peak power from 158 hp to 192 hp, and the torque — from 119 lb-ft (162 Nm) at 5,200 rpm to 141 lb-ft (191 Nm) at 6,490 rpm.
Interior Update and Service Cost
The car’s interior is also updated: new seats are installed, upholstered in a special fabric material perfectly suited for cars of that era.
Given the complexity of the restoration, the service cost is very high. A complete restoration starts from 13.2 million yen (approximately $83,000). If the client needs the company to find an AE86 for restoration itself, the minimum cost rises to 16.5 million yen (over $103,700).

The price reflects not only the cost of labor and parts but also the car’s status as an icon of car culture. Demand for original and high-quality restored AE86s remains consistently high among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Similar programs that combine official manufacturer support with the expertise of legendary tuning ateliers are effectively creating a new market for certified retro cars with quality guarantees and the possibility of legal use.
