Denza Z9 sedan to be updated and equipped with a hypercar engine

Updated Denza Z9 sedan receives hypercar-level power

The Denza brand from BYD has unveiled an updated version of its flagship electric sedan, the Z9. This comes just a year and a half after the debut of the original model, which was created as a sedan counterpart to the Z9 GT Shooting Brake wagon. The new version has received significant design changes and even more power.

Key features of the update include:

Fresh design features

Images from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveal a fully updated body. The front shows redesigned split LED daytime running lights, while the main headlights are now positioned next to the black lower section of the grille.

The side profile remains sleek, but new rearview mirrors, similar to those used on Volvo and Polestar models, are now available. The door handles have also been redesigned, and new slim LED rear lights are installed at the back. The car’s length is 5090 mm, width is 1980 mm, height is 1490 mm, and the wheelbase reaches 3025 mm.

Two levels of electric power

The ministry’s documents mention two different all-electric versions. The first is a single-motor version with a 496 hp electric motor on the rear axle. The weight of this model, depending on the configuration, will range from 2397 kg to 2438 kg. The top speed is 250 km/h.

However, as is clear from Denza’s information, even nearly 500 horsepower is not enough. At the top of the Z9 sedan family will be a three-motor version. It combines a pair of 416 hp motors and one 362 hp motor, totaling 1328 hp. This gives it a power advantage over the existing Z9 GT Shooting Brake wagon, whose maximum power is 1274 hp. The top speed of this model is 270 km/h, and its weight is 2588 kg.

Brand’s global ambitions

Details of this new model emerged shortly after Denza announced the launch of the current Z9 GT Shooting Brake on the global market with sales in Europe and Australia. Given that the updated sedan is already in preparation, it is quite likely that a new version of the wagon is also planned, and it will inherit some of the sedan’s design changes.

The appearance of the updated sedan with such extreme power underscores the rapid development of the Chinese auto industry in the premium electric vehicle segment. Denza, a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, is clearly aiming not only at the domestic market but also at direct competition with established European brands. The technical specifications of the Z9, especially the three-motor version, place it alongside the world’s most expensive and powerful electric sedans, signaling a new stage in the evolution of electric vehicles where China is claiming leadership not only through price but also through innovative technology and performance.
