Mustang with 2200 hp silently overtook all V8 Cobra Jets ever built by Ford

Ford revealed a new electric dragster Mustang Cobra Jet 2200

Ford continues to amaze the world with its incredible electric projects. After the SuperVan 4.2 van, the F-150 Lightning SuperTruck pickup, and the Super Mustang Mach-E crossover, engineers have introduced a new “otherworldly” development created exclusively for breaking records on the drag strip.

Technical specifications and power

The new model is called the Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 and is the third fully electric Cobra Jet from Ford. The first was the 1400 in 2021, followed by the 1800 in 2023. As you might guess from the name, the new Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 delivers an incredible 2200 horsepower. This figure far surpasses even hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista.

The power comes from two electric motors. Each can generate about 1200 hp, while they weigh approximately half as much as the motors on the three-year-old Cobra Jet 1800.

Innovative transmission and design

Despite being an electric vehicle, the Cobra Jet 2200 uses a centrifugal clutch for controlled torque delivery at launch. The car is also equipped with a two-speed gearbox. The battery is located on the floor, with two additional battery packs positioned at the rear. There is also a battery at the front that can be moved to adjust weight distribution depending on track conditions.

Impressive performance and records

What is particularly striking is that the Cobra Jet 2200 not only has significantly more power than its predecessor but also weighs about 1100 pounds (499 kg) less. Its curb weight is approximately 3325 pounds (1500 kg). According to Ford, thanks to the combination of immense power, traction, transmission, and relatively low weight, the Cobra Jet 2200 covers a quarter mile in just 6.76 seconds, reaching 222 miles per hour (357 km/h).

Last weekend, Ford Racing presented the car at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, where it completed several runs faster than 7 seconds. The car immediately set a new world record for electric vehicles with a time of 6.87 seconds at 221 mph, and in the next run improved it to 6.81 seconds.

This is the third fully electric Cobra Jet that Ford has built, starting with the 1400 model in 2021, and then the 1800 in 2023. As you might have guessed from the name, the new Mustang Cobra Jet 2200 delivers 2200 hp, which is a truly impressive figure that easily surpasses even hypercars like the Rimac Nevera and Pininfarina Battista.

This project demonstrates how rapidly electric vehicle technologies are evolving in the field of high performance. In three years, Ford has not only increased power by 400 horsepower but also drastically reduced the weight of the powertrain, allowing it to achieve record-breaking figures. The use of a centrifugal clutch and a two-speed gearbox indicates that even in the world of electric cars, traditional engineering solutions remain relevant for achieving maximum efficiency on the drag strip. This car is not just another concept but a real tool for setting new speed standards, as confirmed by official runs at NHRA competitions.
