Subaru Sales in the USA: April Decline and Unexpected Leaders
Subaru’s total sales in the USA in April decreased by 5.9% compared to the same period last year, totaling 52,733 vehicles. Most models showed a significant drop in demand, however, some positions managed to show growth.
The Subaru Ascent, which is nearly ten years old and has not undergone significant changes since its facelift in 2023, continues to lose customer favor. Despite this, the crossover managed to sell better in April than the brand’s three electric vehicles combined. 3,472 Ascents were sold, which is 1,419 units more than the combined sales of the Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted models.
Electric Vehicles: Unexpected Growth and New Players
Despite the general trend, sales of the electric Solterra rose by 18.9%, even with the cancellation of the federal tax credit. This is likely due to the model’s recent update, which received an improved powertrain and a larger battery, providing a range of up to 288 miles (463 km).
As for the Trailseeker and Uncharted models, they are completely new and only started arriving at dealerships last month. Therefore, it is too early to draw conclusions based on these figures. Nevertheless, their appearance in the lineup helped Subaru of America set a new monthly record for electric vehicle sales.
Decline of Popular Models
Unfortunately, the good news ends here. Sales of the popular Forester fell by 7.7%, and the Impreza showed an alarming decline of 43.6%. Buyers also continue to ignore the updated Outback, sales of which decreased by 8.3% to 10,552 units.
The only models, besides the Solterra, that showed growth were the Crosstrek and the WRX. Crosstrek sales increased by 4.9% to 15,667 units, likely boosted by the hybrid version.
WRX: Rapid Growth Thanks to Discounts
As for the WRX, its sales jumped by 52.6% — 1,178 sedans found new owners. This growth is likely linked to significant price reductions. For example, the WRX Premium version now starts from $33,995, which is $3,755 cheaper compared to the previous model.

Subaru’s April results present a mixed picture. On one hand, the company is recording a serious drop in demand for key models such as the Outback and Forester, which could indicate market fatigue with current generations or increased competition. On the other hand, the success of the Solterra and Crosstrek suggests that buyers are responding positively to updates and hybrid technology. It is worth noting that the overall sales decline of 12.7% since the beginning of the year is a worrying signal, especially against the backdrop of the growing share of electric vehicles. The strategy of significant discounts on the WRX worked, but time will tell if it will be effective for other models. The arrival of the new Trailseeker and Uncharted models does not yet significantly impact the overall statistics, but could become an important growth driver in the future.
