Police chase in Memphis: mother with child in car endangered life due to lack of license
Fleeing from police is one of the worst behaviors a person can choose. But when a small child is inside the car, it moves into an entirely different category. That is exactly what a woman did in Memphis, Tennessee, earlier this year.
Recently released footage from a police car dashcam shows the moment the suspect refused to stop when police demanded in her red Dodge Charger in March. This forced law enforcement to begin a pursuit. Fortunately, the chase took place on quiet rural roads rather than in a noisy city, allowing the officer to push the Charger off the road.
How the pursuit unfolded
Instead of the traditional PIT maneuver (Precision Immobilization Technique), the officer simply pushed the Dodge from behind. This proved sufficient to shove the car onto a grassy area to the left of the road. The female driver lost control, the car crossed the road and flipped onto its roof.
For several minutes, the Charger lay on its roof. Then the woman slowly opened the rear door, and her 3-year-old son climbed out. The boy appeared unharmed but was clearly confused and frightened, running toward the police officer.
Reason for fleeing — lack of a license
The woman slowly crawled out of the car and admitted she had fled because she did not have a driver’s license.
«You ran from me because you don’t have a license?—she heard in response from the officer. —You almost killed your child, do you understand me? You could have killed your child, do you understand? That was the stupidest thing you have ever done in your life. Today you made the stupidest decision of your life, do you understand?»
According to the police officer, the suspect accelerated to 80 miles per hour (129 km/h) in a zone with a 55 mph (88 km/h) limit while trying to escape. She was immediately arrested and charged with reckless driving, fleeing, driving without a license, first-degree child endangerment, and, since the Charger belonged to her boyfriend, unauthorized use of another’s property to commit a crime.
This incident serves as a reminder of how dangerous impulsive decisions behind the wheel can be, especially when there are passengers in the car. Fleeing from police due to a lack of a license is not just a traffic violation but a conscious endangerment of a child’s life. Fortunately, this time it ended without tragic consequences, but such cases should serve as a lesson for all drivers: no reason justifies risking the lives of loved ones.
