Updated Kia Niro 2027 significantly raised its status and no longer has an electric version

Updated Kia Niro arrives in America this summer

After its global debut in January, Kia introduced the updated Niro in America. The model will hit the market this summer with a refreshed design, new technologies, and an exclusively hybrid lineup.

Exterior changes: style and modernity

The crossover has received a “more confident and modern appearance.” The changes are immediately noticeable: a new front end with elegant “Star Map” style headlights, an updated bumper, and a redesigned grille. The rear has also undergone changes: a new liftgate with a cleaner design, the license plate moved down to the redesigned bumper, and the taillights now feature a 3D effect. New body colors are available: Ivory Silver and Sunset Beige.

Interior and technology

Inside the vehicle, a new steering wheel and a panoramic curved display have appeared. Higher trims feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system. Base versions have a smaller display. Models with the Kia Connected Car Navigation Cockpit system have gained quick controls and the ability to receive over-the-air updates.

Powertrain and performance

The vehicle is equipped exclusively with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine producing 139 hp (104 kW) and 195 lb-ft (265 Nm) of torque. The engine works in conjunction with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels. Acceleration to 60 mph (100 km/h) takes 10.7 seconds, with a top speed of 109 mph (175 km/h). Fuel economy figures have not yet been announced, but they are expected to be on par with last year’s model: 53 mpg city, 54 highway, and 53 combined.

Chassis and safety improvements

Kia states that the overall driving experience has been improved thanks to “refinements in suspension settings, ride comfort, and cabin quietness.” This promises a “smoother and more composed driving experience.”

The Forward Collision Avoidance safety system now includes intersection, cyclist, and oncoming traffic detection features. The Lane Following Assist 2 system has gained a Hands-on-Detection sensor that monitors driver attention through the steering wheel. The Highway Drive Assist 2 system has become available, and the top-tier SX Touring trim offers a blind-spot monitor and a 360-degree view.

Trims and pricing

A new S version has been added to the LX, EX, SX, and SX Touring lineup, likely positioned between the LX and EX. More detailed information, including pricing, will be announced closer to the start of sales.

The updated 2027 Kia Niro is betting on hybrid technology, abandoning the fully electric version. This decision may be linked to the company’s goal of optimizing production and focusing on the most popular powertrain type in this segment. Given the growing demand for hybrids, which offer a balance between fuel efficiency and the absence of “range anxiety,” this move seems logical. The improvements in the cabin and safety systems make the Niro more competitive in the compact crossover market, where technology and comfort are key factors.
