New Polestar 4 crossover brings back the rear window that its ‘twin’ lacked

Polestar 4 gets a new body: the crossover without a rear window brings it back

Polestar is expanding the Polestar 4 lineup by introducing a new body variant — an SUV. This solution promises to add practicality to an already unusual electric vehicle.

The Polestar 4 is an unconventional four-door crossover coupe with a fully electric drivetrain that drew attention for one odd feature: the lack of a rear window. Now the automaker is expanding the model range with a new body type that promises significantly greater practicality.

While some expected the model to become a wagon, it was officially announced as the Polestar 4 SUV. The teaser focuses on the rear, where the electric vehicle looks more like a hatchback from this angle.

The rear window has finally appeared

The most noticeable changes compared to the standard Polestar 4 are a redesigned roofline, a slightly altered rear window, and a vertical rear cut. This vertical cut brings the rear windshield onto the tailgate, officially making this car a five-door electric vehicle. The rest of the design is expected to remain unchanged.

The SUV will almost certainly retain the coupe’s wheelbase of 2,999 mm (118 inches) and likely the overall length of 4,840 mm (190.5 inches), as the rear bumper appears to carry over unchanged. What it adds, according to Polestar, is an additional level of flexibility and practicality with versatile storage capabilities for every journey.

At the same time, the SUV will retain the design, performance, and environmental characteristics of the Polestar 4 coupe. The 400V architecture will provide a WLTP range of up to 630 km (392 miles) for the single-motor rear-wheel-drive version, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive model will produce up to 544 hp (408 kW / 552 hp). Polestar adds that the SUV features retuned chassis components designed to balance comfort and sporty response.

Everywhere except the US

Polestar has scheduled the market launch for September 2 in the UK. The company also confirmed that the Polestar 4 SUV will be produced in Busan, South Korea, and sold in most markets where the Geely-owned brand currently operates. This list will not include the US, where Polestar is forced to wind down sales after the 2027 model year due to the Connected Vehicles Rule.

Thus, Polestar is taking an interesting step by bringing back the rear window to a model that initially abandoned it for the sake of bold design. The new SUV variant is likely to become a more practical choice for families or those needing more space without sacrificing modern technology and performance. At the same time, the decision not to sell this model in the US due to regulatory restrictions underscores the complexity of global automotive trade amid growing political and technological barriers. This could impact Polestar’s strategy, forcing the company to focus on other key markets, such as Europe and Asia, where demand for electric vehicles continues to grow.
