The Toyota Probox, which has faithfully served Japanese plumbers, sales representatives, and families seeking budget transportation since 2002, stands a good chance of getting a new generation by 2028. Despite its appearance, which can be compared to a “fax machine on wheels,” this car remains incredibly practical and affordable. According to rumors from Japan, the successor is about to receive modern technical equipment, though not without a price increase.
The current Probox model (XP160) has been produced since 2014 and received its latest update for the 2026 model year, adding better safety systems and minor interior changes. These updates will allow the model to last on the market for a few more years, but the old platform, Spartan interior, and boxy body no longer hide its age.
New platform and technical content
According to Japanese publication Car Repo, citing insiders, Toyota is laying the groundwork for the next-generation Probox, which will debut in late 2027 or early 2028. Sources suggest the wagon may shed its outdated base in favor of the TNGA-B architecture, already used on the Yaris, Yaris Cross, and Aqua. This should improve body rigidity, reduce weight, and enhance ride quality and handling. Importantly, the new platform will allow retaining a flat and low cargo floor — one of the Probox’s main advantages. For reference, the current Probox is 4,245 mm long, placing it between the Yaris and Corolla.
Under the hood, the Probox could receive an updated self-charging hybrid system with improved efficiency and performance. Currently, the model is available exclusively with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter engine in both regular and hybrid versions, as the smaller 1.3-liter unit was removed from the lineup.
In terms of design, expect the utilitarian, rectangular body shape to be retained, but with the addition of modern LED headlights and fresh colors. One can only hope that Toyota’s designers will add a few “off-road” accents, making the car an ideal base for creative projects.
Price increase: an inevitable consequence of modernization
If the rumors are confirmed, additional technology and modern equipment will lead to a price increase. Car Repo estimates that the starting price of the Probox could rise by ¥300,000–500,000 ($1,800–$3,000). Thus, the budget wagon would move from its current ¥1,918,400 ($11,700) toward ¥2,200,000 ($13,400), potentially even exceeding the price of the cheapest training version of the Corolla, which costs ¥2,142,800 ($13,100).
For now, Toyota has not officially confirmed the release of a new Probox, and no camouflaged prototypes have been spotted, so these rumors should be treated with caution. Nevertheless, the arrival of a successor would be very welcome, as the world could use another cheap wagon built for work.
For the Ukrainian market, where practical and inexpensive cars are always in demand, the arrival of a modern Probox could be an interesting alternative. Given the popularity of Japanese “workhorses” among small businesses and families, an updated model with a hybrid and better safety could find its buyers despite the likely price increase. In a situation where new compact wagons are gradually disappearing from the market, a possible revival of such a model looks especially valuable.
