by A 1986 BMW 635CSi Group A, prepared by Schnitzer Motorsport, has been put up for auction in Munich. The racing car with chassis E24-RA2-79 is estimated at $600,000-$800,000. RM Sotheby’s writes about this.
Racing BMW 635CSi won the 24 Hours of Spa in 1986
Of the approximately 80 BMW 635CSi prepared at the time for Group A, this example is one of about ten factory cars. In the 1986 season, it started nine times in the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC).
The main result was victory in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. The BMW started ninth and finished first. Behind the wheel were Dieter Quester, Altfrid Heger, and Thierry Tassin.
The car was also driven by Roberto Ravaglia, Emanuele Pirro, Gerhard Berger, and Otto Rensing. In addition to the Spa victory, the BMW reached the podium three times in ETCC races in 1986.
BMW 635CSi Group A underwent restoration and received a rebuilt engine
In 2017-2024, the BMW was restored, serviced, and prepared for racing at the Swiss Graber Sportgarage. At the end of 2025, Pastrolli Classic Cars in Maranello overhauled the engine and installed a new clutch. Documented costs for these works exceed $300,000.
Currently, the BMW 635CSi is fitted with a period-correct replacement engine, but the original unit is also included in the package. The car retains its historic Genuine BMW Parts livery and recently took part in Spa Classic and Monza Revival.
Along with the car, a historic FIA technical passport valid until the end of 2026 is handed over, as well as archival timing sheets and technical documentation from Schnitzer Motorsport.
