2027 Porsche Taycan Update: Virtual Gears and New Technologies
Last year, Porsche sold only 16,339 units of the fully electric Taycan, the lowest figure since the model launched and more than half of the 41,296 units delivered in 2021. However, Porsche is not ready to let the Taycan fade away quietly, and the 2027 update aims to keep it competitive against the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door.
E-Shift: Eight Virtual Gears
The main change in the updated Taycan is the E-Shift system, which drivers will notice first. The name explains the essence: virtual gear shifting in a car that has no physical gears. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N first introduced this idea, and it has now spread to the new Mercedes and even the Ferrari Luce.
The system offers manual and automatic modes, allowing drivers to shift eight virtual gears using paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Porsche claims the feeling during gear changes is “authentic,” and the torque curves have been tuned to enhance this effect. A virtual rev limiter has also been added, and the German manufacturer has tuned the Electric Sport Sound system to work in conjunction with the shifting.
Every Taycan in the lineup can be equipped with E-Shift, but only the Turbo GT gets it as standard equipment. On all other models, it is available in the options list.
New Battery and Infotainment System
Standard models of the 2027 Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S are equipped with the larger 105 kWh Performance Battery Plus, which supports fast DC charging at 320 kW and features a new battery health display. Models sold in the US, except for the Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package, also receive an NACS charging port on the front passenger fender, while a J1772 port for AC remains on the driver’s fender. A CCS adapter is included.
The update also touches the Taycan’s digital displays. The Porsche Communication Management system now uses computing power that is five times higher than before, ensuring faster response. Additionally, the look of the infotainment system software has been updated for clearer graphics and more minimalist icons. Easily accessible widgets can be added, and owners can use a dedicated App Center to download apps from Porsche and third-party developers.
Porsche has also improved AI-based voice control, allowing passengers to have more natural conversations with the system and ask follow-up questions without repeating “Hey Porsche.” The power of the wireless smartphone charger has increased to 25W, which, according to Porsche, charges the phone approximately 1.5 times faster than before. Infotainment system updates can now be installed entirely “over the air.” Finally, the 2027 Taycan gets 16 new Paint to Sample colors, bringing the total to 153.
Pricing and Sales Launch
Pricing in the US starts at $111,900 for the updated rear-wheel-drive Taycan, excluding the $2,350 delivery fee. Orders are already open, and deliveries are expected to begin in the fall.
This update demonstrates that Porsche is not just updating technical specifications, but is trying to maintain an emotional connection with drivers accustomed to traditional internal combustion engine cars. The introduction of virtual gears and improved sound is an attempt to make the electric vehicle more exciting to drive, which could be a key factor in attracting hesitant buyers to switch to electric power. At the same time, the increased battery capacity and charging power address practical issues, making the Taycan more competitive in the luxury electric vehicle segment.
