Updated Lada Niva Legend: Almost 50 years old, and it’s still in service
Most cars produced in 1977 can now be found only in museums or as rusty wrecks. The Lada Niva is a completely different story. Anyone who hoped that AvtoVAZ would finally say goodbye to this classic model after almost half a century clearly underestimated both the company itself and the market in which it operates. Instead, the Russian manufacturer has introduced an updated version of its legendary off-roader. Externally, it looks almost the same as ever, but under the hood and in the design, significant changes have occurred, including a new engine.
Premiere at the Economic Forum
The updated Niva Legend debuted at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia. At the exhibition stand, next to it were the production off-roader Azimut and the classic sedan VAZ-2101. However, AvtoVAZ was not overly generous with photographs, so we will see the full picture only after the official sales launch, planned for later this year.
Design: Minimum changes, maximum recognizability
The recognizable “cube” of the Niva has hardly changed since 1977. The only visible update before this was the modernized bumpers that appeared during the 2020 facelift. The 2026 update is equally restrained. On the outside, one can notice new 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels and a black ventilation vent on the hood. This basically concludes the visual changes.
Rust-resistant body and improved interior
Despite the exterior design remaining unchanged, the front end, hood, roof, rear doors, and rear bumper of the Niva Legend are now made from double-thickness galvanized steel. This ensures better durability in harsh operating conditions and, most importantly for a car of this age, finally makes the body resistant to corrosion.
Inside, the main novelty is the steering wheel from the Lada Granta sedan, which brings with it a driver’s airbag for the first time in Niva history. The ignition switch has moved to the right side, the gearshift lever has become closer to the driver, and the transfer case control is now operated by a single lever. Photos from the event also show a large multimedia system display on the center console.
A major event at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum: the innovative Lada Niva Legend was presented. The off-roader received a new steering wheel with an airbag, a modern multimedia system with a large display, and a redesigned center console. The main technical update…
Sound insulation was also improved, and a modern heating and air conditioning system, now featuring a cabin filter, was installed. It is because of this filter that a new air intake appeared on the hood, improving ventilation. The Niva also received central locking and one key for the doors and ignition — proof that old cars can learn new “tricks”.
New engine: More power and torque
The old 1.7-liter engine has made way for a slightly larger 1.8-liter 8-valve unit used in the Niva Travel. It produces 89 horsepower (66 kW) and 153 Nm of torque. This is 7 hp and 24 Nm more than its predecessor. The new engine also delivers 80% of its maximum torque from as low as 1000 rpm and allows for a 3-30% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the old motor.
In addition to the new engine, Lada has “modernized” the Niva Legend’s suspension. The stabilizer bar has been moved forward, which, according to the company, improves handling and comfort. The braking system has also been enhanced thanks to ventilated discs.
Overall, the company claims that the Niva Legend has received over 100 new and 60 modernized parts and assemblies, improving all its technical characteristics. Production is already being prepared, and prices will be announced later.
Looking to the future and the sports version
This update came shortly after patent images of a possible modern successor to the Niva surfaced online in mid-May 2026. Lada has not yet confirmed the development of a new Niva, so the only evidence is fleeting footage of prototypes on the factory premises.
At the same event, Lada showed motorsport fans its new track cars: the Vesta TCR and the new Iskra TMS. The latter was developed by TMS Motorsport together with AvtoVAZ for a budget monocup racing series, the launch of which is planned for 2027.
The track version of the sedan received its own bumpers, wide wheel arch extensions, and a rear spoiler, looking significantly sportier than the previous version. It is also equipped with a roll cage, racing alloy wheels, and a modified suspension. Under the hood is a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine producing 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 280 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed sequential manual transmission.
The update of the Lada Niva Legend is not just another facelift, but a testament to the model’s incredible longevity. Instead of being retired, the car has received critically important modern features: an airbag, a corrosion-resistant body, and a more modern engine. This makes it not just a nostalgic toy, but a fully competitive option for those needing a simple, reliable, and capable off-road vehicle. At the same time, the appearance of patents for a new generation and sports versions hints that AvtoVAZ does not intend to rest on its laurels and is already looking to the future, trying to combine its legendary heritage with modern technologies.
