In the United States, a legendary Ford GT40 MkII from 1966 was sold at auction. The rare sports car fetched $12,475,000, making it one of the most expensive cars in Ford’s history. This is reported by Focus, citing the “Mecum” auction.

The sale amount is comparable to the cost of several modern hypercars. For the Ford GT40, this is not a record within the model, but it confirms the consistently high demand for iconic examples.

The GT40 model is known for being Ford’s direct response to Ferrari’s dominance in endurance racing. The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four times in a row, which later became the basis for the film “Ford v Ferrari”.

Overall, Ford GT40 coupes are considered the brand’s most expensive cars. Their prices start at approximately $5 million, and some individual examples have already exceeded the $13 million mark.

Only 11 Ford GT40 MkII coupes were ever built. This particular car belongs to the extremely rare XGT-3 version — only three such cars exist. They are distinguished by reduced weight and adjustable suspension.

Under the hood is a 7.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine with 485 horsepower, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 330 km/h. Over 60 years, this GT40 has never undergone restoration, preserving its completely authentic condition.

Until 1977, the sports car was part of Ford’s factory collection, after which it passed into private ownership. The preserved original components and untouched history were key factors in its high auction price.
