Porsche stockpiles gasoline-powered Macans
Porsche is building up a warehouse inventory of Macan SUVs with internal combustion engines. Production of this SUV will end in the summer of 2026. A successor is expected to hit the market in 2028, joining the electric Macan EV.
Why is the gasoline Macan still popular?
Although the fully electric Macan has been on sale since 2024, the gasoline version remains an important source of profit for Porsche. Production of this SUV is planned to end in the summer of 2026, but the automaker is building a reserve stock to meet demand until the arrival of a new gasoline successor later this decade.
The logic behind this decision is obvious. In the first quarter of 2026, the original Macan posted 10,130 sales in the US, while the fully electric Macan, launched in 2024 on the PPE platform (shared with the Audi Q6 e-tron), sold 8,079 units. Despite the gasoline model’s design dating back to 2013, with updates in 2019 and 2021 only keeping it relevant, it still outsells its high-tech successor.
Why is Porsche ending production?
Although the world clearly wants more gasoline Macans, Porsche cannot continue to support an outdated platform. The SUV’s inability to meet new cybersecurity regulations effectively forced it out of the European Union in the spring of 2024, and re-engineering the decade-old architecture to comply was economically unfeasible.
How does Porsche plan to fill the gap?
According to the German magazine AMS, Macan production at the Leipzig plant (Germany) is running at full capacity, rather than the usual make-to-order principle. In other words, Porsche is building up a warehouse stock for regions such as North America, potentially extending the gasoline model’s availability until 2027.
Once the last car leaves Leipzig this summer, the configurator will become unavailable. New customers will not be able to order a car from scratch, but warehouse stocks should be sufficient to supply dealerships while Porsche works on the next step.
New gasoline Macan: what is known?
Although it was initially planned that the Macan EV would completely replace the ICE model, market conditions have forced Porsche to reconsider its electrification strategy. A new SUV is currently being developed that will be offered alongside the electric version. It is reported that the model will use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) from the Audi Q5, offering gasoline and hybrid powertrains. However, its arrival is not expected before 2028, which explains why Porsche is so concerned about filling the gap with the current generation.
This situation demonstrates the complexity of transitioning to electric vehicles, even for premium brands like Porsche. Despite the technological sophistication of the electric version, consumers, especially in the US market, still prefer the proven gasoline engine. The strategy of stockpiling allows the company to buy time without losing sales and to prepare the platform for a new generation that will likely be a hybrid compromise between the old and new worlds. It also underscores that full electrification plans for a lineup can be adjusted based on real demand, not just regulatory requirements.
