Genesis Discontinues Sales of the Electric G80 in the U.S.
Premium electric vehicles would seem to be a perfect fit for the U.S. market thanks to their quiet operation and power. However, the electric version of the G80 found no demand among American buyers, forcing Genesis to reconsider its strategy.
Why Did the Model Disappear from the Market?
After the G80 Electrified suddenly disappeared from the official Genesis website, the company confirmed that it no longer offers this model in North America. A press statement noted:
“Genesis no longer offers the G80 Electrified in North America. The customer is always our top priority, and we adapt to the changing needs of the market. Our sedans and electric vehicles remain an important part of the lineup, including the G70, G80, G90, and Electrified GV70.”
Unlike the GV60, the G80 Electrified was not built on a dedicated electric platform but had solid specifications: 365 hp and a 282-mile range.
Low Sales as the Reason for Discontinuation
In 2024, only 140 units were sold in the U.S., and in the first half of 2025, just 77. An additional factor was the 15% import tariffs, as the model was produced exclusively in South Korea. Unlike the Electrified GV70, which is assembled in Georgia, the G80 Electrified did not make it onto the list of locally produced vehicles.
This situation shows how important the balance is between technical specifications, price, and production localization for success in the competitive electric vehicle market. Genesis continues to work on other electric models, but it seems sedans are not currently a priority for American buyers.
