Americans love pickups, but don’t love the model from Hyundai

Hyundai Sales: Records and Declines

Hyundai showed record sales in the first half of 2025, increasing volume by 10%. The most popular models were the Tucson, Elantra, and Santa Fe, which demonstrated significant growth. However, not all of the brand’s cars are moving forward — the Santa Cruz lost 21% of sales compared to last year.

In June, Santa Cruz sales fell by 31%, reaching only 2,048 units. This is the worst indicator among all Hyundai models, except for the hydrogen-powered Nexo. For comparison, the competitor Ford Maverick, which costs about the same, showed growth of 26.3% in the second quarter. In the first half of the year, Ford sold six times more Mavericks than Hyundai sold Santa Cruz units.

Why is Santa Cruz losing?

One of the main reasons may be the absence of a hybrid version for the Santa Cruz. The Ford Maverick offers a standard hybrid engine that provides exceptional fuel efficiency — up to 42 miles per gallon in the city. Hyundai, however, is limited to a conventional gasoline engine with less impressive indicators.

Overall, Hyundai continues to strengthen its position in the US market. In June, the company sold 69,702 cars, which is 3% more than last year. The first half of the year became the most successful in the brand’s history. However, the electric models Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 showed a decline of 16% and 23% respectively, while the new Ioniq 9 is gradually gaining momentum.

Interestingly, the Tucson remains Hyundai’s sales leader, demonstrating 21% growth in June. The Santa Fe is also showing good results, increasing sales by 15% since the beginning of the year. At the same time, despite individual failures, the company’s overall dynamics remain positive.
