Import of American Cars to Japan
Japanese automakers may start importing some models of pickups and SUVs, manufactured in the USA, back to Japan. Among the potential candidates for import are the Toyota Tundra, Nissan Frontier, and Honda Ridgeline. This step is connected to the easing of trade tensions between Japan and the United States, especially after an agreement that reduced import tariffs to 15 percent.
Historical Obstacles for American Cars in Japan
American cars have traditionally been difficult to sell in Japan due to their large sizes, which do not suit the country’s narrow and crowded roads. Japan is known for its kei cars — super-compact automobiles specifically designed for urban conditions and strict size limitations.
Position of Toyota’s Leadership
Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda expressed readiness to import some large models produced in the USA, such as the Tundra, to Japan. This can be seen as a gesture to reduce political pressure from former US President Donald Trump, who demanded greater access for American cars to the Japanese market.
We cannot sell if consumers do not want to buy, but if there are cars attractive to consumers, it’s not a bad idea at all.

Demand and Import of Foreign Models
From January to July of this year, over 60,000 vehicles produced by Japanese brands abroad were imported to Japan. Many of them came from India, where Suzuki manufactures the Fronx SUV and Jimny Nomade. Honda also imports compact SUVs from India.
High Prices and Limited Sales
Importing cars manufactured in the USA faces difficulties due to high production costs and exchange rate fluctuations, making these models expensive and limiting their sales in large volumes. Analyst Yoshiaki Kawano from S&P Global Mobility noted that such cars could occupy a niche in the premium segment but would not achieve sales levels comparable to Indian imports.
Cars manufactured in the USA are expensive due to production costs and exchange rates, so sales on the same scale as Indian cars are not expected. There is demand in Japan for large cars popular in the USA. If they can emphasize the American image, they can be sold at high prices.

Potential Import Candidates
Among the possible import candidates, Kawano named the Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tundra, and Toyota Sienna. He also noted that the Tundra already has niche popularity in Japan and is available as a parallel import.
Although the import of American models may be symbolically important for trade relations, its practical impact on the Japanese market is likely to be limited. Large cars will remain a rarity on Japanese roads, and their price category will limit mass demand. However, for enthusiasts and those who appreciate American style, these models could become an interesting addition to the local market.
