Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Update for the 2027 Model Year
The AMG division is preparing to launch the updated GLE 53 SUV for the 2027 model year. This modification of the fourth-generation GLE has received the characteristic star-shaped daytime running lights from Mercedes, which have become the brand’s new signature.
The car is expected to receive a significantly larger radiator grille, the design of which will reference the new electric GLC model. This is already the second update for the fourth-generation GLE, which was first introduced back in 2018, indicating the company’s desire to keep the model relevant in a competitive market.
Exterior Changes and Design
One of the most noticeable changes to the exterior will be those same star-shaped daytime running lights, which Mercedes is gradually implementing across its entire lineup. They first appeared on the rear of the E-Class and will now be applied to the front of updated models.
The new radiator grille will receive a frame, which the current version of the GLE lacks, both in the standard Mercedes trim and in the AMG version.
In addition to the grille, the update will affect the bumpers and possibly the wheel design. Since this is a planned update and not a new generation, the overall body contours and sheet metal will remain unchanged.
Expected Technical Improvements
Under the hood, the familiar 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a mild hybrid system will most likely remain. However, AMG engineers will probably find a way to slightly increase its power compared to the current 429 horsepower (435 metric hp).
This enhancement becomes especially relevant against the backdrop of the expected launch of the new generation BMW X5 (code G65) in 2026. The German competitor, also planned for the 2027 model year, brings with it the modern Neue Klasse design language and a powerful M60 sports version, which could make the design of the current GLE look outdated.
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 update is taking place during a period of change in the brand’s design department, where longtime creative director Gorden Wagener recently announced his departure. However, his influence on the brand’s car design will remain noticeable for a long time, including on this updated SUV. The debut of the updated model is expected in 2026, with arrival at dealerships in the fall of 2027. This indicates that Mercedes is trying to maintain the lifecycle of its key models in the face of rapid evolution in design and technology in the premium segment, where competition from BMW and other players intensifies every year. The success of this update will largely depend on how well the engineers handle the enhancement of the technical part and whether the visual changes can effectively counter the avant-garde design of future competitors.
