AMG has created a sedan that growls, roars and shifts gears as if there’s a V8 under the hood. Even though there isn’t one

Mercedes-AMG is preparing an electric version of the GT 4-Door Coupe

Mercedes-AMG is approaching the presentation of a new generation of the GT 4-Door Coupe, which this time will be fully electric. If previously this model competed with the Porsche Panamera, now its main rival will be the electric Porsche Taycan. Despite abandoning the internal combustion engine, engineers promise to preserve the characteristic AMG drama and driving feel.

Artificial V8 sound and car character customization

Even without a traditional engine, AMG plans to provide a genuine thrill. A key element is the artificially created V8 sound, which activates along with the digital tachometer when selecting Sport+ mode. This system, together with paddle shifters, is designed to mimic the sensation of a car with an ICE.

The latest video teaser shows AMG brand ambassador Gabriel Macht testing a camouflaged prototype in winter conditions in Lapland. Particular attention is drawn to the three controls on the center tunnel, which allow the driver to configure three key parameters:

The Traction mode is described as the most impressive, as it allows varying the behavior from controlled wheel slip to the maximum possible grip.

Technical basis and characteristics

The new model will become the first production car built on the dedicated AMG.EA electric platform. The concept car at the time demonstrated a power output of up to 1341 hp, provided by three axial-flux electric motors. The suspension will also receive advanced technologies: adjustable air suspension, a semi-active anti-roll stabilization system, and configurable dampers. The braking system will offer a choice between carbon-ceramic and steel discs.

The interior, as seen in the video, will be modern and screen-focused, and the torque vectoring system will likely allow the car to easily enter controlled drifts, as demonstrated in the test video.

The question of how successful this strategy will be — replacing the genuine roar of an engine with synthesized sound, and mechanical satisfaction with deep digital customization — remains open. However, it is clear that AMG is trying to find a new language of communication with the driver in an era when traditional mechanical connections between a person and a car are gradually disappearing. The success of this model could set the tone for all subsequent high-performance electric sedans of the brand.
