AMG realized you miss the V8, so it created a 1153-horsepower GT 4-Door Coupe that imitates it

New Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: An Electric Monster with 1153 hp

Mercedes-AMG has introduced the new generation of its four-door GT Coupe, which has fully switched to electric power. This happens at a time when many other automakers are beginning to scale back their electrification programs. The new model replaces its predecessor, which in its most powerful version had a hybrid V8 engine with 831 hp. Now, the internal combustion engine has disappeared completely.

The new model is based on the AMG.EA architecture, which is largely based on last year’s AMG GT XX concept. The design of the production model has changed compared to the concept, but it still looks very dramatic and will undoubtedly cause controversy.

Design and Competitors

The new electric vehicle is intended to compete with the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. However, according to reviewers, these competitors have a significant design advantage. Despite this, Mercedes-AMG is betting on outstanding performance and features that are meant to create the feeling of a true AMG behind the wheel.

Impressive Power and Significant Weight

The car is equipped with a 106 kWh battery pack, an 800-volt electrical architecture, and three advanced axial flux electric motors. The flagship GT 63 4Matic+ version produces an incredible 1153 hp and up to 1475 lb-ft (2000 Nm) of torque when using launch control. A GT 55 version with 805 hp will also be available.

Acceleration to 60 mph (100 km/h) takes just 2.1 seconds (including one-foot rollout) or 2.4 seconds without it. The car accelerates to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 6.8 seconds, and the top speed with the Driver’s Package is 186 mph (300 km/h). Both versions, the GT 63 and GT 55, weigh 2460 kg.

Fast Charging and Technologies

The car supports fast DC charging with a power of up to 600 kW. This allows charging the battery from 10% to 80% in just 11 minutes, and in 10 minutes, you can add 460 km of range. A full charge of the GT 63 is enough for 696 km on the combined cycle, while the GT 55 manages 700 km.

To increase driver engagement, the car features numerous technologies. On the center console, there is a Response Control switch for adjusting the powertrain response, as well as an Agility Control regulator for changing the car’s behavior in corners thanks to variable torque distribution. Nine levels of traction control system are also available. The AMGFORCE S+ system is of particular interest.

V8 Sound Simulation

The AMGFORCE S+ system is designed to simulate the sound of the V8 engine from the AMG GT R. It works in conjunction with a system that creates the effect of synthetic gear shifts, similar to how it is implemented in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. Overall, the car will have seven driving modes: Comfort, Sport, Race, Slippery, Eco, Individual, and AMGFORCE Sport+, which is activated alongside the shift simulation and V8 sound.

The car is also equipped with AMG Active Ride Control adaptive air suspension with a semi-active roll stabilization system and adjustable dampers. Standard equipment includes rear-axle steering, which turns in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds up to 50 mph (80 km/h) and in the same direction at higher speeds. Carbon-ceramic brake discs at the front and steel ones at the rear are also standard.

Interior and Price

The car’s interior has also undergone radical changes compared to the previous model. It includes a 14-inch infotainment display, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and an optional 14-inch screen for the front passenger. The interior makes extensive use of carbon fiber, a complex ambient lighting system, and a panoramic Sky Control glass roof that can change colors.

Mercedes-AMG has not yet announced final prices but stated that they will be comparable to the prices of the previous models.

The new electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is a bold step into the future for the German automaker. It offers incredible performance that surpasses most supercars, but does so with significant weight and controversial design. Interestingly, the company has decided not just to create a powerful electric vehicle but also tries to preserve the emotional component that AMG fans value so much by imitating the sound and feel of a V8 engine. This could be a key factor for those who miss traditional engines but are ready to switch to electric power. At the same time, competition from Porsche and Audi, which offer more refined design, will be very serious. Whether this technological monster can win the hearts of buyers, time will tell.
