Official: Audi Revives A2 Name for New Electric Crossover
Audi has officially announced the revival of the legendary A2 nameplate. This time, it will be used for a new compact electric crossover, which will replace the conventional A1 and Q2 models in the market. The car, to be named A2 e-tron, will be fully electric and targeted at urban buyers.
Technical Basis and Features
The new A2 e-tron will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electric MEB platform. This means it will inherit the technical base from models like the Volkswagen ID.3. The car will receive a familiar set of technologies, several power options, and will provide a decent driving range. However, the platform limits the car to a 400-volt electrical architecture, which does not allow for ultra-fast charging.
The design of the new model, judging by the published silhouette, pays homage to the original A2 model produced from 1999 to 2005. Back then, it was an innovative but expensive car due to its aluminum body. The new model will have a more conventional steel structure, which will reduce production costs.
Design and Interior
The silhouette shows a shape reminiscent of a compact minivan, with a roofline that slopes gently towards the rear and a small spoiler. According to information, the new A2 will be significantly wider than the original, giving it a more planted and modern appearance. The car is expected to retain the aerodynamic qualities and spacious cabin characteristic of the first generation.
The interior, as shown by spy photos, will be executed in a modern style with a focus on technology. Drivers and passengers will get large screens, a minimalist button layout, and multi-zone ambient lighting. Despite the A2 e-tron becoming the smallest electric Audi, the manufacturer promises it will not feel cheap.
Price Accessibility and Strategic Significance
Production of the new A2 e-tron will be established at Audi’s main plant in Ingolstadt. This model will occupy a key place in the brand’s strategy for the affordable car market. The estimated starting price for the base version will be less than 35,000 euros.
We have listened, stated Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. Our customers want electric mobility that impresses in everyday life. The A2 e-tron is our promise to deliver just that: an efficient, compact, and confident car. We are making entry into the world of electric Audis simpler and more relevant than ever.
The full presentation of the Audi A2 e-tron is scheduled for this autumn, most likely as part of the Munich Motor Show. The return of the iconic nameplate along with its modern electric embodiment indicates Audi’s desire to combine heritage with the future, directing it towards the mass market. The success of this model could significantly expand the brand’s audience and become an important step in its electric transformation, especially in the European market where compact urban crossovers are gaining increasing popularity. Price accessibility, recognizable design, and technological equipment will be key factors in the competitive battle with other premium and mass-market manufacturers who are also actively filling this segment.
