Audi confirmed the first new Q7 in 11 years, but it has already been demoted

Audi has officially confirmed that the third generation of the Q7 crossover is almost here. Its presentation will take place alongside the new flagship SUV Q9. Interestingly, the first official images of the new model have already appeared online ahead of time.

History and model update

The new Q7 arrives almost 21 years after the debut of the original model and 11 years after the release of the second generation. The current generation has been on sale since 2015, undergoing two facelifts — in 2020 and 2024.

First official teaser

Audi has released the first official teaser, which only shows the front door. It does not reveal many details: you can see conventional door handles, updated mirrors, chrome trim on the side windows, an S Line badge, and a straight character line running through most VW Group models. The only real novelty is the color — a new shade of Alopias Blue Metallic.

Spy photos and design

The teaser and image leak are almost irrelevant, as we have already seen prototypes without camouflage, as shown in the photo below.

According to Audi, the new Q7 will have a “sporty, powerful design, highly versatile interior, premium materials, user-oriented technology, and a wide range of driving characteristics — from comfortable to dynamic.”

Spy shots tell more than a press release. Previously, aggressive split LED headlights, a wide honeycomb grille, more sculpted rear fenders, and a vertical rear bumper were spotted. Photographers also captured the hot SQ7 version, which differs with a sporty body kit and larger wheels.

Interior and platform

Inside, the dashboard layout may be shared with the Q9, including a digital instrument panel, a large infotainment touchscreen, and a passenger display. However, the Q7 likely will not get luxurious features such as soft-close doors or a dimmable panoramic roof. Like its predecessors, the SUV will be offered with three rows of seats for seven passengers.

The new Q7 will finally ditch the MLB platform in favor of the newer PPC architecture, already used in the Audi A6. This platform is compatible with internal combustion engines, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, which should improve ride quality and comfort compared to its predecessor.

Debut and positioning

The global debut is confirmed for the beginning of the second half of the year, which is already now, so the full picture is near. Those wanting a more luxurious vehicle can wait for the Q9 — a three-row flagship that Audi is preparing to compete with the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS.

Thus, the new Q7 marks an important step for Audi, as it not only updates an aging model but also transitions to a modern platform promising better technology and comfort. At the same time, the arrival of the Q9 indicates the brand’s strategy to expand its lineup in the premium segment, where competition from German giants is extremely high. This will allow Audi to bridge the gap between the Q7 and more exclusive models, offering buyers a choice between practicality and luxury.
