New Audi A2 e-tron: Almost without camouflage
Audi is preparing to unveil the A2 e-tron later this year as its most affordable electric vehicle. Although we have seen numerous prototypes before, spies recently caught an almost uncamouflaged pre-production model.
Looking strikingly faithful to the minivan that was produced from late 1999 to 2005, the A2 e-tron is an electric hatchback that shares a lot with the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. However, it has a unique design that borrows some features from crossovers.
Design and Exterior
While the front end is heavily camouflaged, we can see a rounded front bumper and a rectangular lower air intake. Previous spy photos also showed that the car will have split lighting units and a fully closed radiator grille that echoes the rest of the e-tron lineup.
The profile is reminiscent of the classic A2, but with a Sportback touch. This results in dynamic glazing and a sloping roof that ends in a pronounced spoiler. Designers have also given the model glossy black trims and aerodynamically optimized wheels. Joining them are pronounced wheel arches, as well as wing-style door handles that resemble those on the BMW X5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Rear end and Interior
There isn’t much to see at the rear, but we can notice a glossy black lower bumper and part of the taillights. They are accompanied by a stylized tailgate with angular accents.
Spy photographers didn’t get close enough for interior shots, but previous images showed a familiar cabin reminiscent of the Q3. This means we can expect an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, as well as a 12.8-inch infotainment system. Joining them is a flattened steering wheel with a fixed crossbar that contains the gear selector and some vehicle controls.
Technical Specifications and Platform
Audi is not disclosing the specifications, but they will likely mirror those of the ID.3 Neo. It features battery packs of 50, 58, and 79 kWh, providing a WLTP range of up to 391 miles (630 km). Volkswagen also offers motors with 168 hp (125 kW / 170 PS), 188 hp (140 kW / 190 PS), and 228 hp (170 kW / 231 PS).
The A2 e-tron, also based on the MEB+ platform, will likely use more powerful powertrains. It’s also worth noting that the model may forgo the quattro all-wheel drive.
The new model is expected to be not only a tribute to the iconic model but also a serious player in the affordable electric vehicle segment. Reviving the A2 as a modern electric hatchback could be a successful move for Audi, especially given the growing demand for compact and eco-friendly city cars. The shared platform with the VW ID.3 Neo will help reduce development and production costs, which will positively affect the final price for customers. At the same time, the unique design, which references the original A2, can attract both classic enthusiasts and new customers looking for something different from standard crossovers.
