Joint project between Audi and SAIC
Following the recent unveiling of the new AUDI E5 Sportback in China, Audi’s separate electric brand has focused on its next project. The new model, which has the shape of a traditional SUV, was first spotted during testing in China. Although the car is covered in camouflage, some design elements similar to the E5 can be discerned.
Technical features
The electric off-road vehicle, developed jointly with SAIC, is expected to go on sale next year and will likely inherit most of the technical solutions from the AUDI E5. According to reports from Chinese sources, the model will be built on the same Advanced Digitized Platform with an 800-volt electrical system that provides fast charging and efficient energy management.
Exterior and design
The overall shape of the car appears similar to the E5, but with slightly larger dimensions and higher ground clearance. Temporary headlights are installed at the front, but the silhouettes of the light units and the connecting light panel are almost identical to the Sportback. A LiDAR sensor is noticeable on the roof, while the retractable door handles and cameras integrated into the front pillars are reminiscent of Tesla’s approach.
Cameras have also replaced traditional mirrors, and a split spoiler is visible at the rear, neatly integrated into the body, complemented by a wraparound light panel with LED elements.
Transmission and batteries
The powertrain options are expected to mirror those offered for the E5. The base version may receive a 76 kWh battery and a single motor with 295 hp, driving the rear wheels. The E5 lineup also includes a rear-wheel-drive version with 402 hp and a 100 kWh battery, as well as an all-wheel-drive configuration with 518 hp and an 83 kWh battery. The top version has two motors and a 100 kWh battery, delivering a total power of 776 hp.
Future brand plans
The AUDI brand, which operates exclusively in China, has also confirmed plans to launch a third model by 2027, although details remain unknown for now. It remains to be seen whether it will continue the SUV trend or enter a new segment.
Audi’s collaboration with Chinese partners demonstrates the growing importance of the local market for global automakers. The use of advanced technologies, such as the 800-volt architecture, indicates the company’s aspiration to compete with other premium brands in the electric vehicle segment. Expanding the model range will allow Audi to reach more consumers with different preferences, which is particularly relevant in the context of intense competition in the Chinese electric vehicle market.
