At the Shanghai Auto Show, GAC’s commercial vehicle division unveiled a new truck concept. It appears to be a preliminary model that will be offered to the global market. The company didn’t share much about the pickup, but it includes elements from Hummer and Tesla. At the auto show, representatives from German and Japanese automakers made a huge impact, but domestic companies also showcased a range of new vehicles. GAC was one of them when they introduced the 01 pickup concept.
The exterior of the concept resembles a strange mix of Hummer and Tesla Cybertruck. As seen, it features a heavily stylized front bumper with angular accents and ‘floating’ headlights. These are complemented by a full-length light strip and a large front bumper with red tow hooks. Further, we see protruding fenders and pronounced wheel arches. The designers also added flat-sided doors, digital side mirrors, and large wheels to the truck.
Additionally, there’s a short body and a minimalist rear tailgate. The interior renderings are low-resolution, but they reveal a high-tech and minimalist cabin with an octagonal steering wheel. The latter is mounted on a rail, suggesting the possibility of easily switching between left- and right-hand drive configurations. We also see a centrally placed display and an angular center console. The company didn’t say much about the concept but noted that sharp lines and muscular surfaces balance between ‘power and futurism.’ They added that the pickup rides on the GAIA (GAC Adaptive Intelligent Architecture) platform and features advanced driver-assistance systems.
There’s also talk of the truck having a drivetrain and suspension that ‘dynamically adapts’ to urban, suburban, and cargo driving conditions. While this is still quite little to go on, it seems the concept foreshadows a production model designed for global markets. The initial countries for release will be Australia, Chile, and Saudi Arabia. Some reports also suggest it may reach Mexico in the future.
