BMW 7-Series Receives Updated Design While Retaining Classic Features

The updated 2027 model year BMW 7-Series is expected to receive not a full redesign, but only a moderate facelift. Key changes include:

Update Expectations

The BMW 7-Series facelift is already on the way, and the first signs indicate it may correct some aesthetic shortcomings of the current model. While BMW is actively moving into the future with its “Neue Klasse” architecture, a full revolution for the flagship sedan will happen later. For now, it is awaiting a more restrained update.

BMW Cuts Its Grille But Not Its Critics In Upcoming 7 Series Facelift

As early as the middle of last year, spy photos of the updated 7 Series emerged during testing. Despite heavy camouflage, key design details were discernible. The overall silhouette remained recognizable: the luxury sedan retains its characteristic split headlights and massive radiator grilles.

Front-End Evolution

While BMW prepares for the official presentation, new renderings from Sugar Design allow for a better idea of what the 2027 7-Series might look like.

Unexpectedly, the kidney grilles appear slightly taller than on the current model. The Rolls-Royce-style vertical slats have disappeared, replaced by black horizontal bars, giving the front end a cleaner and more expressive look. The edges of the grille itself have also become slightly sharper, adding a stricter expression to the car’s face.

Changes have also affected the headlights. Most future BMW models on the “Neue Klasse” architecture will receive headlights that smoothly transition into glossy black panels connecting to compact grilles. In the case of the 7-Series, this is not so. The thin LED daytime running lights are positioned closer to the hood shut line and feature updated graphics.

The main headlight units are positioned lower and have significantly reduced in size—approximately halved compared to the current model. A more aggressive bumper has also been developed for the car.

Changes to the Rear and Sides

As is typical with facelifts, the side profiles will remain virtually unchanged, but some adjustments will affect the rear. New LED rear lights and a different bumper are expected. In the renderings, it is executed with contrasting black and silver elements to provide a lighter sporty accent.

A Full Update Awaits the Next Generation

Unfortunately, a full transition to all the innovations of the “Neue Klasse” architecture will have to wait until the next generation of the 7-Series. The current model has received considerable criticism for its design and does not always look convincing against the backdrop of more streamlined competitors from Audi and Mercedes-Benz, which, by the way, is preparing a facelift for the S-Class this very month. Nevertheless, even a moderate update can help soften some of the sharp lines. For now, any improvement will be welcomed.

This update is happening at a crucial moment for the premium segment, where competition for design elegance and technological sophistication is only intensifying. The changes, though not radical, demonstrate BMW’s attempt to respond to criticism while preserving the brand’s iconic elements. The success of this facelift could significantly influence the model’s market position in anticipation of a true generational change.
