New BMW iX7 electric flagship prepares for launch
Following the unveiling of the fully electric BMW 3-Series, the company is preparing to debut another important electric vehicle. This refers to the large X7 SUV, which will receive its own electric modification called the iX7. Although the first spy photos of this car appeared several months ago, now, considering the launch of the smaller Neue Klasse models, we can better imagine what technologies it will be equipped with.
Design combining tradition and innovation
No radical changes are expected in the iX7’s design. This model, together with the conventional X7, is entering the Neue Klasse design era, but does so less aggressively than the compact i3 and iX3, which are aimed at a younger audience. The overall body contours will remain recognizable, featuring characteristic Neue Klasse body lines and flush door handles. However, the car will retain a more classic large kidney grille and split headlights, unlike the solid LED ‘visor’ used on the smaller iX3.
Distinctive features of the electric version will include flat kidney grilles, iX7 badges, and, of course, the absence of exhaust pipes. In all other aspects, following the example of the 5-Series/i5 and 7-Series/i7 pairs, the two different powertrain versions of the X7 will look almost identical.
Technical features and platform
As with the i7, both X7 versions will be built on an updated version of BMW’s existing platform for large SUVs. This will allow the company to assemble models with internal combustion engines and electric motors on the same production line. This pragmatic approach means the iX7 will not become fully futuristic, unlike the smaller Neue Klasse electric cars, but this will not prevent it from receiving key technologies.
Advanced electric technologies
BMW plans to equip its largest electric SUV with the latest batteries featuring more energy-dense cells. The fast-charging system will operate on an 800-Volt architecture. If the smaller iX3 is capable of over 500 miles per WLTP cycle, then the iX7 with its significantly larger battery, likely with a capacity of over 100 kWh, should demonstrate similar figures.
All-wheel drive with two electric motors will be standard. As for power, it would be no surprise if the top version exceeds the 800 hp mark, as even such figures in the modern world of electric SUVs no longer seem unbelievable.
Interior and market expectations
Inside the cabin, the driver will be greeted by BMW’s latest technological solution – the Panoramic iDrive system and a projection display. However, this luxury will come at a high cost. Sales are expected to start around 2027, and the price of the new BMW iX7 will most likely exceed the one hundred thousand dollar mark, making it one of the most exclusive and technologically advanced offerings in the brand’s lineup.
The planned launch of the BMW iX7 demonstrates the company’s strategy aimed at electrifying the entire lineup, including the largest and most prestigious models. This is not just adding an electric version to an existing nameplate, but a comprehensive approach to renewal, where key Neue Klasse technologies are gradually integrated into different segments. The success of this model could significantly influence the perception of premium electric vehicles, offering customers a familiar luxury experience combined with advanced electric powertrains and autonomous driving.
