BMW may return power units with increased range

BMW changes its approach to electric vehicles with extended range

Unlike many competitors who have overestimated the demand for electric vehicles, BMW has managed to find a balance by offering customers a choice between petrol, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric models. Company head Oliver Zipse noted:

“We have the right products on the market at the right time”

This strategy has paid off – every fifth BMW car sold in 2023 was fully electric. However, the company continues to develop alternative technologies for customers who are not yet ready for a full transition to EVs.

New technologies in development

According to a report by the German publication Automobilwoche, BMW is preparing to launch an iX5 REx model with an extended range of about 1000 km. Although details of the new powertrain have not yet been disclosed, it could appear as early as 2026 and will be available in key markets, including China, Europe, and North America.

BMW representatives are cautious in commenting on this information but do not deny it:

“We constantly analyse usage patterns, customer needs, and market development, assessing the potential of various technologies”

Interest in range-extender technology is gradually reviving among automakers. For example, Ram has already introduced the 1500 Ramcharger model, and Scout and Jeep are also working on similar solutions. This indicates that the car market is looking for a compromise between environmental friendliness and practicality, especially for long trips or regions with underdeveloped charging infrastructure. BMW seems to be preparing to offer its customers exactly such a balanced option.
