Production of the BMW Z4 is reportedly set to end in 2026, and no successor model has been announced yet. This decision is complicated by Toyota’s exit from the joint project, which affects future development and production cost-sharing. However, a designer has already envisioned what a new Z4 in the Neue Klasse style could look like—with smaller kidney grilles and sharper headlights.
The History and Role of the Z4 in BMW’s Lineup
For over three decades, BMW has included a roadster in its lineup, starting with the unusual Z1 in 1989, followed by the more traditional Z3, and finally the Z4. These cars have always served as a diversion among the brand’s numerous sedans and SUVs, reminding us that the company is sometimes capable of creating something small, light, and fun to drive.
Modern Design and Future Changes
Compared to most modern BMW models, the Z4 still looks stylish. However, when Neue Klasse cars start arriving, beginning with the next iX3, its design may start to look outdated. This naturally fuels rumors about the possible emergence of a new model.
The current Z4 is expected to end production next year without an officially confirmed replacement. If this happens, BMW will be left without a small sports car. To fill this gap, digital artist LS Design has imagined what a Z4 inspired by the Neue Klasse might look like. The result is a compact roadster with updated lines and a bright presence that looks quite attractive.
Updated Exterior
Although the roadster maintains proportions close to the current Z4, every body panel has been redesigned, including the front end. The large kidney grilles are reduced in size, reminiscent of BMW’s past and echoing the style of the new iX3. Black trim extends to the redesigned headlights, which now feature clear LED daytime running lights for a more technical appearance.
LS Design also added a sporty front bumper for the open model range with sharp lower grilles and darkened air intakes. The sides of the car look just as appealing as the front, with sharp creases, black sills, and door handles integrated into the body.
Prospects for a New Model
Currently, BMW shows no signs that a new version of the Z4 is in the works, a situation complicated by Toyota’s decision to develop the next GR Supra on its own. The current Supra uses the same platform and production line as the Z4, allowing both brands to save on economies of scale for a niche product.

If the Bavarian company does decide to release a new version of the sports car, there is a possibility it could become an electric vehicle to compete with the future all-electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman.
Despite BMW’s official plans remaining uncertain, interest in compact sports cars among enthusiasts remains high. The possibility of creating an electric roadster opens new horizons for the brand, especially in a world increasingly focused on eco-friendly solutions. Neue Klasse technologies could be the key to combining driving dynamics with modern demands for efficiency and design.
