BMW Introduces Updated X5 for 2027 with New Headlights and Refreshed Interior

Design and Technology Updates

The latest prototypes of the next-generation BMW X5, codenamed G65, showcase production front and rear lights. This allows for a clearer understanding of the final appearance of the SUV. Both lighting types adhere to BMW’s Neue Klasse design language and strongly resemble those installed on the iX3.

The front headlights are nearly identical, while the thin horizontal rear lights feature a new light signature that distinguishes them from the electric SUV but maintains the overall shape.

Release Plan and Powertrains

During an earnings call for the third quarter of 2025, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse confirmed that the new X5 will be introduced and go on sale next year. The model will be available with five powertrain variants: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrids, fully electric, and hydrogen fuel cells. The hydrogen model, however, is not expected before 2028. BMW also plans to expand the lineup with high-performance X5 M and Alpina B7 versions by 2027.

Interior and Cabin Technologies

Spy photographers managed to take several shots of the interior, which showcases revolutionary changes. The traditional instrument panel has been replaced by an elegant display stretching from pillar to pillar at the base of the windshield. This system, known as Panoramic iDrive, is significantly different from previous solutions.

The prototype’s display appears raw, but BMW has already shown a more refined version, divided into three sections. A digital instrument cluster is positioned in front of the driver, along with two other zones that can be customized with up to six widgets.

The widgets are expected to include a compass, weather, audio, navigation, as well as performance indicators such as a G-meter and current power and torque readings.

New Steering Wheel and Multimedia

The interior also features a new steering wheel with two-tone contrast stitching. It is equipped with tactile buttons that replace the iDrive controller. The central display, hidden in a bulky casing for camouflage, has an interesting shape. The multimedia system will run on Operating System X, which promises greater personalization. The improved Intelligent Personal Assistant uses large language models for more natural communication.

Exterior and Platform

The exterior follows the design of the Neue Klasse X concept with a reinterpreted kidney grille and headlight treatment. Also noticeable are a large lower air intake and a quad-exhaust system, hinting at a possible review of the new X5 M60i version. The model will be built on an updated version of the CLAR platform, incorporating some Neue Klasse features. In addition to the five main powertrain options, there are rumors of an iX5 REx with an additional range extender, providing a combined range of approximately 1000 km.

The implementation of hydrogen technologies and the expansion of electrified options indicate BMW’s strategic shift towards alternative energy sources. This could significantly impact the premium SUV market, where competition for sustainability is intensifying. The integration of Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X points to the brand’s aspiration to combine innovation with practicality, which could become a new standard for luxury-class vehicles.
